Birma Lorene Mares, aged 98, passed away peacefully on December 5, 2025, surrounded by memories of a life lived with love and purpose. Born on December 29, 1926, in Rylie, Texas, to James and Martha Mayfield, Birma spent her early years in Abilene, where she not only graduated from high school but also laid the foundation for a life filled with creativity and compassion.
In 1946, Birma married Ernest Thomas, and together they welcomed four children. While the course of life took her in a different direction, leading to a divorce in 1957, she found love again in July 1958 when she married Joseph Mares. Their union brought joy and companionship.
Birma was an artist at heart, pouring her energy into her love for quilting and numerous hobbies and crafting. Her hands created beauty, weaving heartfelt stitches into blankets that wrapped her family in comfort. At BX Exchange, she dedicated herself to helping others, working in returns and exchanges with a smile that brightened every interaction.
Faith played a vital role in Birma's life; she was a cherished member of First Bible Baptist Church in Kennedale for many years, where she forged lasting friendships and nurtured her spiritual growth.
Birma leaves behind a legacy of love and resilience. She was preceded in death by her parents, Martha and James Mayfield; her devoted husband, Joseph Mares; her son, Ernest Thomas Jr., son-in-law, Charlie Warn: and an extensive family of five brothers and three sisters.
She is survived by her beloved daughters, Linda Sue Warn, Diana Kay Patrick, and Lola Darlene Mullins, along with devoted son-in-law. The richness of her life continues through her 14 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, and 15 great-great-grandchildren, along with countless nieces, nephews, and dear friends who will cherish her memory forever.
Birma's visitation will be held at the Emerald Hills Funeral Home & Memorial Park in Kennedale, Texas, on December 11, 2025, from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM, followed by a funeral service at 2:00 PM. As we gather to celebrate the life of this remarkable woman, we remember her laughter, her spirit, and the indelible impact she has made on all who knew her. She will be missed but never forgotten.
