A Life of Hard Work, Unconditional Love, and Unwavering Devotion to Family
A man’s legacy is not measured by the riches he leaves behind, but by the lives he touches, the sacrifices he makes, and the love he gives along the way. By that measure, José “Joe” Socorro Cantero lived a life of immeasurable wealth.
José “Joe” Socorro Cantero was born on June 24, 1943, in San Diego de la Unión, Guanajuato, Mexico, to Julián Cantero and Felipa Pérez. Raised on a ranch in the beautiful countryside of Mexico, Joe learned early in life the meaning of hard work, responsibility, and perseverance. His childhood was spent surrounded by horses, working the land, and helping his family tend to the ranch. Those humble beginnings shaped the man he would become—a man of strength, determination, and an unbreakable sense of duty to those he loved.
In his young adult life, Joe married María Esquivel, and together they created a family and home with their five children in Mexico City.
In the early 1970s, with dreams of greater opportunities and a better future, he made the courageous journey to the United States. Like so many who leave behind the familiarity of home in search of something more for their families, Joe carried with him little more than his determination, his work ethic, and his hope for a brighter tomorrow.
In 1978, Joe married Frances Garza, and together they built a life rooted in love, family, and perseverance. After settling in South Texas, Joe relocated his family to Venus, Texas, in the early 1980s, where he planted the roots that would grow into a lasting family legacy. With his hardworking hands and entrepreneurial spirit, he established a small residential painting business in the construction industry. He took pride in his craft, earning his living through dedication, long hours, and honest work. For Joe, no job was too difficult and no sacrifice too great when it came to providing for his family.
When he wasn’t working, Joe found peace and happiness in the simple pleasures of life. He loved spending time outdoors, carefully tending to his garden and keeping his yard looking its best. There was something special about watching him work the soil, nurture his plants, and take pride in the beauty he created with his own two hands. Perhaps it reminded him of his childhood on the ranch in Mexico, where his love and respect for the land first began.
He also enjoyed settling in to watch a good Western movie, where stories of courage, loyalty, and grit echoed many of the values he lived by. And when soccer was on, especially his beloved Mexican leagues, you could be sure Joe would be following the action. These were the simple joys that made him happy and the familiar moments his family will forever hold dear.
Joe was a man who spent his life building things—not just homes and businesses, but a foundation upon which generations of his family could stand. But above all else, Joe’s greatest love, his greatest accomplishment, and his greatest pride was his family.
To his children and grandchildren, Joe was so much more than a father and grandfather. He was their hero, their protector, their provider, and the steady pillar upon which they could always lean. Even when his family was grown, he never stopped being a father, never stopped worrying, and never stopped wanting to make sure everyone was taken care of.
Joe is survived by his loving sons, Cesar, Angel, and Julian Cantero; his cherished daughters, Martha and Coco; his many beloved grandchildren; his sisters, Cecilia, Hilaria, Nico, and Aurora; his brother, Martin; and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and loved ones whose lives were touched by his presence.
He was preceded in death by his beloved son, Israel Cantero, and his wife, Frances Cantero.
Although his family must now learn to navigate a world without his physical presence, the love he gave and the lessons he taught will remain woven into the fabric of their lives. He will be remembered in every garden planted, every soccer game watched, every Western movie enjoyed, and every act of love and sacrifice made for family.
His hardworking hands may finally be at rest, but the life he built and the love he gave will continue for generations.
