Malcolm Carpenter

February 10, 1926 — April 6, 2018

Malcolm James (Jim) Carpenter died peacefully at home on April 6, 2018. He was born February 10, 1926 in Wichita Falls, Texas to Milburn James and Ethel Mae Carpenter and graduated from Wichita Falls High School. He served in the Army Air Corps in World War II as a radio operator on the B29 “Miss Patches”. Miss Patches was hit by anti-aircraft fire in the spring of 1945 and made a last ditch emergency landing on Iwo Jima, possible only because of the sacrifices of the many thousands of brave Marines weeks before. Jim was awarded a Purple Heart for injuries received.

Following his discharge, he attended college in Wichita Kansas and in Stillwater Oklahoma where he met and married his wife of 57 years, Joan Klugh Carpenter. Following graduation, they moved to Fort Worth Texas where Jim found his calling in electrical engineering. After many years of night school, he graduated from Arlington State College with a degree in Electrical Engineering. He loved his work and reluctantly retired at the age of 88.

Jim was a loving and devoted father to their two daughters, Elizabeth Anne (Beth) and Amy Louise. He was a loyal friend to anyone in need, lending his many talents to repairs and other projects whenever called. He enjoyed photography, travel, computers, nature and animals of any kind, fishing, woodworking and reminiscing with his fellow veterans at the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Jim was preceded in death by his beloved wife Joan, his parents and his three siblings, Harold, Lucian and Lucy.

Jim appreciated the care he received at the Fort Worth Veteran Affairs Clinic, including that of Drs. Barry and Upadhyaya, Janet, and Michelle and staff at the Audiology Clinic. The family wishes to acknowledge the devoted care and support from Dr. Dean Carrington, Janet and Barbara, and that received in his final illness from the caregivers and staff of Home Care Assistance and Vitas Hospice.

A Celebration of Life service will be held Thursday, April 12, 2018 at 10:00A.M. at Emerald Hills Funeral Home, 500 Kennedale-Sublett Rd., Kennedale.
