Tommie Bennett, 82, passed away on 21 August 2026 at Select Specialty Hospital in Dallas, TX. He was born on June 6, 1944, in Youngstown, Ohio to Robert Junior Bennett and Martha Lillian Tomlinson.
Tom grew up in Youngstown, Ohio. He graduated from Hubbard High School in Youngstown in 1963. After high school he:
In 1964, Tom proudly answered the call to serve his country by joining the United States Marine Corps. Over the next four years, he served honorably, including service in the Vietnam War.
Throughout his Marine Corps career, Tom received numerous medals, awards, and qualifications in recognition of his dedication, discipline, and commitment to duty. His honors included the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal with the 1960 device, and Good Conduct Medal. He also earned the Expert Rifle Badge and Marksman Pistol Badge.
Tom continued to develop his military and leadership skills throughout his service. He completed Marine Squad Tactical training in 1964 and attended NCO Leadership School in 1966.
After four years of dedicated service, Tom was honorably discharged in 1968 with the rank of Sergeant.
Tom’s service as a United States Marine and Vietnam veteran was an important part of his life and legacy. His dedication to his country, his fellow Marines, and his duty will always be remembered and honored.
He began working for General Motors as a Production Supervisor where he worked for 30 years. He retired in 2001 after 30 years.
Tom married Sara Stearns in 1966 in Winchester, Virginia. They were happily married for 51 years. He enjoyed anything that had to do with building things whether it was wood, a house, a model or just fixing anything.
Tom was preceded in death by his wife Sara Bennett, his parents Martha Morgan and Robert Bennett, and brother Gary Morgan.
Tom is survived by his daughter, Wendy Jones and her husband Barry Jones, his Son Todd Bennett and his wife Christy Bennett his grandchildren Ashley Jones, Brandon Jones, Aaron Bennett, Austin Bennett, Dylan Bennett his great-grandchild Marcie Chapman; and his nephews Rusty Morgan and Randy Morgan

The family wishes to extend their gratitude to Select Specialty Hospital – Dallas, Baylor Scott and White, and UT Southwest who were all instrumental in his care for up to the end of his life. Tom will be greatly missed by his family and all who knew him. He was truly one of a kind.
