Charles Richard (Rick) Mitchell passed away on Tuesday, June 14, 2022, at 8:00 pm.

Rick was born on October 1, 1948, in Dallas, Texas to Lillian and Charlie Mitchell.  He grew up in Oak Cliff and graduated from South Oak Cliff High school in 1966.  He joined the Army in October of 1966 and served honorably until September 1969.

While serving in Vietnam, he received the Vietnam Service Medal with four Bronze Service Stars, Sharpshooter (rifle) Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal.

After leaving the military, he attended the University of North Texas, where he completed his Master's degree in History, and then attended Southern Methodist University where he received his Master's of Liberal Arts.

Rick was preceded in death by his parents, and his son, James Mitchell.  He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Brenda Mitchell, daughter Cristi Mitchell, son Tristan Mitchell, and granddaughter Melody Mitchell

Rick was proud to be a Master Mason, raised to 32nd degree in April 1980, with the Fort Worth Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, Jewel P. Lightfoot,

He was a voracious reader, especially loving history books.  He loved playing and setting up his trains with Tristan, and he and Tristan loved to watch old movies and car shows.

Rick taught History at El Centro College (now Dallas County College). He believed in the value of an education and was always encouraging family and friends to pursue a higher education.  He always believed that an education was something no one could ever take away from you.

He retired from the State of Texas after 30 years as a Criminal Investigator with the Office of the Inspector General, and supervisor of two of the largest offices in the State.

He was a big guy with a bigger heart.  He was so kind and giving and forgiving.  He cherished his family and his friends.  He was saddened by the tragedies, disappointed by the defeats, uplifted by the successes and good fortune, and brightened by the amusements that occurred in the lives of his friends.  He often shared those stories and feelings with his family.

He was genuine.  He was passionate.  He was a good husband, father, and friend.  He will be so missed by his family and friends.  We give our loved ones back to God.

Rick will be buried at the DFW National Cemetery in Dallas, on June 27 at 1:00pm.

A celebration of Rick's life will be announced in the near future.
