Doris Maude Jarvis was born on May 29, 1924, to Manasseh and Mary Tonge. Doris grew up in Swetes Village, Antigua, West Indies, with ten brothers and three sisters. She went to be with the Lord on Thursday, April 23, 2020, at the age of 95 in her home in Arlington, Texas.
In Antigua, she became a seamstress after she left school, working for the Antigua government. At age 25, Doris married Earl Hunte in St. Johns, Antigua. During their union, two sons and three girls were born. Earl Hunte passed away in 1955.
Five years later, in 1960, Doris re-married Francisco Jarvis. Doris and Francisco moved from Antigua to Brooklyn, New York, in 1964, where she continued working as a seamstress in Lower Manhattan. During their marriage, one girl and two boys were added to the family.
Francisco worked as a mechanic in New York until they moved to Arlington, Texas, in 1977. In Texas, Francisco continued as a mechanic, and Doris worked for many years as a cook and a school crossing guard for Arlington Independent School District until she retired. Francisco passed away in 2001.
Doris was a firm believer in Jesus and a long-time member of Arlington Baptist Church. She enjoyed going to church and encouraged her family to do the same. She also enjoyed reading her Bible, sewing, entertaining friends, and cooking delicious meals for her family.
Doris was preceded in death by her parents, her son John Jarvis, her grandson Larry Mason Bowers Jarvis, one sister, and eight brothers.
Doris’ was considered the matriarch of the family, and will be cherished by her siblings Bob Francis, Christy Charles, Trudy Friday, Theodore Francis, and Morris Francis. Her memory will also be carried on by her children Alford (Deborah) Hunte, Romelee (Harold) Harris, Annette Clayton, Ermaine (Carlin) Lowry, Earl (Sandra) Hunte, Francoise (Leon) Patterson, Reynold Jarvis; her ten grandchildren and her 12 great-grandchildren, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
